Nestled within Singapore’s civic and business districts is Pullman Singapore Hill Street, a contemporary hotel targeted at the modern urban adventurer.

Sometimes you know exactly the kind of guest a hotel is targeting as soon as you step into its lobby. That happened recently, when we were upon arrival instantly flanked by antique luggage and old suitcases stacked to the ceiling, gilded rails and accents reminiscent of the golden age of travel, yet swanky and modern to the hilt.

Welcome to Pullman Singapore Hill Street, a contemporary yet youthful property dripping with chic and panache. We’re guessing guests here are either a seasoned modern traveller, a curious city explorer, or a globetrotting party animal.

Or a combination of the three.

The travel theme is strong with this one.

Located in Singapore’s downtown core at the confluence of its civic, entertainment and business districts, it is perfectly placed for guests looking to explore Singapore’s historical and cultural sites on foot. Right across is Fort Canning, a hilltop park chockfull of history and heritage, while for art and culture lovers the Peranakan Museum, National Museum of Singapore, and National Gallery of Singapore are within easy walking distance.

Pullman Singapore Hill Street is fairly new too. Opened last year, it is part of Pullman Hotels & Resorts, which sits among the premium brands of global hospitality giant Accor. Much like its sister property Pullman Singapore Orchard over at Singapore’s prime shopping district, Hill Street is also design-led and culture-driven in a way that appeals to the younger, but more sophisticated, contemporary traveller.

The hotel offers 350 rooms and suites across just five different configurations, all of which are curated specifically to suit exactly that kind of traveller. They range from the more accessible Deluxe Room to the more expansive Executive Room, while the Studio Suite is its biggest and most luxurious.

The Executive Room with Bay View at Pullman Singapore Hill Street.

I had the pleasure of staying in the fancier Executive Room With Bay View, an upgraded version of the Executive Room.

The room was surprisingly spacious, considering that the kind of traveller they are targeting who won’t be spending too much time in it. Clad in dark wood and earthen tones with some splashes of orange for pops of colour, it exudes a warm cosiness when the curtains are closed, and when drawn open the room is flooded with a bright cheeriness thanks to its floor to ceiling glass windows. Depending on which floor you’re on, you’ll be treated to an excellent view of the Singapore city skyline, with the iconic Marina Bay Sands in the backdrop. That is, if soaking in the view from your hotel room is important to you.

The husband did have some problems drawing the curtains properly closed for the night, but I attribute that more to a user problem than any kind of design issue.

Fancy bathroom

Our room came with an expansive king-sized bed that was more than comfortable enough. On one side is an actual proper-sized work desk, presumably targeted at those who combine work with leisure. We like the open concept wardrobe, which comes with sufficient space to slide and store a mid-sized suitcase below.

A downside is that the television is awkwardly-placed, and angled wrongly if you’re the sort to watch from the bed to fall asleep.

Otherwise the room is littered with the kind of modern amenities you’d expect in a classy premium property like Pullman Singapore Hill Street. On one side is a cabinet where you’ll find some of those amenities: coffee- and tea-making accoutrements, and some snacks, primarily.

The bathroom though is a little on the smaller side. The husband enjoyed the rain shower, but I wished there was a tub to luxuriate in. At least that would put the city skyline view to good use. The single vanity does come with a filtered water tap, which we approve of, as well as the C.O. Bigelow bathroom amenities.

One of the two swimming pools at Pullman Singapore Hill Street

You can’t tell from the outside, but Pullman Singapore Hill Street is big. Which means it comes with many facilities for guests. Fitness junkies will love the hotel gym, which comes with both indoor and outdoor spaces depending on whether you prefer exercising in air conditioning or in the open air. There are two hotel pools too, one on the lobby floor – flanked by cabanas – better for proper laps, while the one on the rooftop is geared towards lounging while enjoying the views of Marina Bay over a drink from El Chido, the hotel’s Mexican-themed rooftop bar.

For dining, there’s American-themed all day dining restaurant Madison’s – which offers an insanely popular New York-inspired weekend brunch – that also hides Japanese izakaya and cocktail bar MOGA.

And for those perusing the Executive Room (or better), you get access to the Executive Lounge. It can get a bit crowded during happy hour, but that only proves that the hotel gets its demographic targeting right.

Verdict:

Pullman Singapore Hill Street is perfectly positioned for those looking to traipse across Singapore’s urban downtown spaces, with its chic, contemporary interiors a nice departure from the usual plain vanilla luxury chain hotels. It’s really targeted more at the seasoned urban adventurer instead of vacationing families with young and old, or if you’re a local looking to experience your own city’s history and culture anew.
