Back for its third edition in Singapore, California Wine Month again shines the spotlight on the Golden State’s bold wines, sustainable practices, and trailblazing spirit.

Wine lovers, time to raise a glass or three — it’s California Wine Month this June! Back for its latest edition since a successful debut in 2022, the annual event by the California Wine Institute will again celebrate the top quality wines that hail from the Golden State. From 1 to 30 June, over 100 retail and online points across Singapore will be pouring and promoting the finest from California’s expansive wine regions, ranging from entry-level crowd-pleasers to collector-worthy icons.

For those who may not be aware California is the leading winemaking state in the United States, producing 81% of all wine from the country. In fact, it’s the fourth largest wine-producing region in the world. Perhaps more importantly the “Bear Flag Republic” is known for producing wines of exceptional quality, especially from the much-celebrated Napa Valley as well as those of neighbouring Sonoma.

Let’s not forget the sustainable ethos. A whopping 80% of California wine is now produced in certified-sustainable wineries, with 55% of vineyard acreage following the same path. In a world where climate consciousness is as important as quality, California is leading the charge.

With over 5,900 producers growing more than 110 varietals in a total of 154 appellations — the Americans call them American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) — this is an invitation to discover everything from coastal freshness to mountain-grown intensity.

This June, you’ll have the opportunity to do so with California Wine Month. An all-retail celebration this time, you can look forward to in-store tastings, promotional bundles, and curated events at participating physical and online retailers such as FairPrice, RedMart, Malt & Wine Asia, Bottles & Bottles, 75cl, Cellarbration, Enoteca Singapore, Wine Hours and more.

California Wine Month makes its return

But what to look out for, you ask? Here are some suggestions:

  • Napa Valley and Paso Robles: You’ll want to seek out rich, bold Cabernet Sauvignons from producers such as Louis M. Martini, Orin Swift and The Prisoner Wine Company; or structured Bordeaux-inspired blends like those of DAOU Vineyards or J.Lohr.
  • Mendocino and Lodi: These lesser-known AVAs produce a wide range of varietals, but truly shine with Zinfandel. Try the Edmeades Mendocino Zinfandel or the Midnight Reserve from Lodi-based LangTwins for something off the beaten track.
  • Carneros and Santa Barbara: Cooler climates here favour racy Chardonnays and perfumed Pinot Noirs. Rombauer’s Carneros Chardonnay and Hahn’s Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir are standout options.

California Wine Month isn’t just a shopping spree; it’s truly a chance to explore and taste the diversity of the wines from that part of the world.

Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just starting to discover the charm of Californian sunshine in your glass, June is the perfect month to dive in.
