Fatigued by the high concept excess of Bangkok’s cocktail scene? Toma y Toma on Sukhumvit 22 offers a refreshing counterpoint with playful Latin-inspired drinks, approachable pricing, and the easy comfort of a true neighbourhood bar.

Bangkok’s cocktail landscape has become increasingly competitive, with bars across the city pushing deeper into high-concept storytelling and technical experimentation. Against this backdrop, newly-opened Toma y Toma by Singapore-born Sarnies Group takes a notably different approach with uncomplicated cocktails, approachable pricing, and an almost homely atmosphere designed more for casual repeat visits than destination drinking.

Located above Sarnies Cantina and Carito’s on Sukhumvit 22 in Bangkok’s vibrant upmarket neighbourhood of Phrom Phong, the space feels deliberately casual in a way that altogether feels part living room, part listening bar, and part neighbourhood watering hole.

Making cocktails at Toma y Toma

The cocktail programme, developed by the team behind sister concept F*nkytown — known for its wild gastronomic cocktails — centres on Latin American flavours interpreted through familiar formats.

Highlights include the Horchata Ramos, a tropical take on the Ramos Fizz with rum, horchata cream and tamarind, and Banano Blanco, a refreshing mezcal highball with banana, cucumber and carbonated coconut water. More adventurous is the Queso & Cola Sour, combining cheese-washed whiskey, mezcal and homemade cola.

If you hanker for a touch of Funkytown’s influence, that comes up strongest in the Ceviche Fizz — think a Gin Fizz dirtied with ceviche dressing and smoked olive.

Our favourites though was the Molé Fashioned, which blended Irish whiskey with plata tequila and spiked with spiced chocolate, cherry and bitters, as well as the fruity pisco-based Guayabazo Sour with its notes of plum and guava.

Drinks here are designed by sister concept Funkytown.

Elsewhere, wine-based cocktails by the jug, frozen slushies, and zero-proof alternatives reinforce accessibility over complexity. Bar snacks such as Tigre Mussel Croquetas and 18-hour sous vide Grilled Beef Tongue make for similarly unfussy yet fun bites to help hold down the drinks. The Chicken Crisps are a must-order, those crunch-worthy crackers of chicken that have pounded flat into submission and then oven-baked are, pardoning the pun, absolute crack.

If you’re tired of the increasingly performative theatrics offered by Bangkok’s award-focused cocktail heavyweights, Toma y Toma is that relaxed neighbourhood bar you may be looking for.
