Tokyo Confidential’s delightfully bonkers new Konbini Confidential menu transforms Japan’s beloved convenience store culture into cocktails that sound every bit as inventive, nostalgic and addictive as the late-night snacks that inspired them.
There are few modern institutions more dependable than the Japanese konbini. Need breakfast at 5am? A fresh shirt before a meeting? Concert tickets, cash, postage stamps, headache tablets, famichiki or a suspiciously good egg sando at three in the morning? The convenience store is there to oblige, asking for little more than exact change and your eternal gratitude. Somewhere between the starkly fluorescent lights and impeccably stocked shelves, it becomes less a shop than a way of life.
Naturally, someone has now decided to turn that peculiar national obsession into cocktails.
That someone is Tokyo Confidential, the irreverent rooftop bar in Azabujuban that has built its reputation on menus inspired by the sort of wonderfully odd ideas most people abandon after their second kaku high. Following previous concepts like ‘Neko No Densetsu’ and ‘Second Base’, its latest menu, ‘Konbini Confidential’, raids Japan’s convenience stores with gleeful abandon, transforming familiar late-night cravings into drinks that sound equal parts ridiculous and irresistible.
Frankly, that’s usually where the best cocktails begin.
Founder and Creative Director Holly Graham says the idea was born from recognising that while tourists chase viral konbini snacks, locals rely on them almost daily. It feels like an obvious source of inspiration once someone points it out. After all, few places better capture modern Japan than FamilyMart, Lawson or 7-Eleven, where salarymen, students, chefs and jet-lagged travellers all eventually find themselves queueing for exactly what they never knew they needed.
Behind the bar, Bar Manager Waka Murata looks to have approached the menu with professional exuberance. Rather than merely borrowing flavours, each cocktail deconstructs a familiar convenience store favourite before rebuilding it in liquid form.
The one I would order first? Probably the Onigiritini, because any martini involving sake, rice shochu, seaweed and soy sauce deserves at least one chance to prove itself. Close behind comes Confidential Noodle, a bourbon and awamori highball flavoured with mango, corn and a bespoke seasoning blend inspired by Cup Noodles, served in a custom 3D-printed mug because, naturally, it should be. Then there’s Mom’s Spaghetti, which somehow turns Japan’s beloved Napolitan into a cocktail through barley shochu, pickled vegetables and, yes, actual ketchup. I have questions. The sort best answered with a glass in hand.
Fortunately, not everything leans towards the savoury end of the konbini aisle. Melon Pan channels the beloved sweet bun through melon pan-infused doburoku, the bar’s house Butter Up Sake and rum, while Always Sunny in Azabu pays tribute to frozen mikan popsicles with gin, mikanshu, yakiimo shochu and bright citrus. Night Hopper takes the familiar Grasshopper into late-night snack territory with rum, pandan, mint, cacao, cream and cookies, while Give Me A White Wine Spritzer nods to Japan’s enduring affection for grape-flavoured sweets through an unapologetically eclectic combination of vodka, Calvados, sherry, pisco, Niagara wine and champagne.
Tokyo has no shortage of excellent cocktail bars. Yet every so often one comes along that reminds you the best drinks are not always built around rare spirits or elaborate techniques, but around an idea so gloriously daft that it simply has to work. Konbini Confidential sounds exactly like that.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I suddenly have an overwhelming craving for an onigiri. And perhaps a martini that tastes like one.
