Penang Cocktail Week returns 1–7 September 2025 with ‘A Cocktail of Cultures’ — a globe-spanning celebration that will turn George Town into one of Southeast Asia’s most spirited crossroads of bartending talent, cross-border creativity, and local pride.

Penang’s George Town is about to get a little louder, a lot livelier, and infinitely more spirited this September. Penang Cocktail Week makes its highly-anticipated return next month — running 1–7 September 2025 — that will see the small Malaysian island and its environs erupt with a week-long celebration of the flavours, traditions, and personalities that make Penang’s bar scene so distinctive.

Founded in 2023 by Koh Yung Shen of Backdoor Bodega fame, Penang Cocktail Week has quickly grown into one of Malaysia’s biggest bartending festivals — one rivalling even the expansive Kuala Lumpur Cocktail Week. It’s a platform not just for great drinks, but for raising the profile of a scene where nearly 90% of independent cocktail bars are owned and run by the bartenders themselves.

This year’s theme, “A Cocktail of Cultures”, is more than a clever tagline. Penang Cocktail Week 2025 will welcome a lineup that reads like a who’s who of the global cocktail world flying in to participate. Revellers can expect to see renowned bartenders from the UK, Canada, and Singapore rubbing shakers with emerging talents from India, Taiwan, Vietnam, China, and beyond.

Penang Cocktail Week is a celebration of cocktail culture in the small island state

Kicking off the festivities is a welcome party with a North American bar takeover at Mojo Jojo featuring Bar Bello (Montreal), Cry Baby Gallery (Toronto), Lao Wai (Vancouver) and Thunderbolt (Los Angeles), along with an entire plethora of city-wide guest shifts by bars running from Cosmo Pony (Jakarta) and Wing Lei Bar (Macau) to ZLB23 (Bengaluru) and The Curator (Manila).

Expect plenty of cross-border creativity. Across the week will see cross-culture bar takeovers including a special India Cocktail Week collaboration, a Vietnam All-Stars evening, a Bangkok block party, as well as the return of the popular Taiwan Takeover, spotlighting rising bar stars from Taipei, Taichung, and Tainan.

Of course, the festival’s signature Malaysian Invasion is back too to celebrate local pride. This time it’s a Borneo Edition, honouring East Malaysia’s pioneering bartenders alongside younger talent making waves abroad.

For the first time, Penang Cocktail Week will wrap with the inaugural Bar Show Malaysia at Ascott Gurney Penang — a 7,000-square-foot Cocktail Convention Centre brimming with brand booths, masterclasses, and bartending competitions, before closing out with a poolside party at Glass Bar.

All in all, Penang Cocktail Week will set Malaysia’s cocktail scene abuzz with plenty of activity to keep George Town buzzing from happy hour till last call, once again proving that this small Malaysian island has an outsized talent for shaking things up.
