Hākari at Magpie

July 28 @ 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm
$98
The food at Magpie transcends geographical boundaries and cultures.

As part of its month-long Mātariki celebrations, Hākari at Tiong Bahru restaurant Magpie Singapore is an intimate one-night-only four-hands dinner that explores the shared Fijian heritage of two New Zealand-born chefs through a deeply personal Pacific-inspired menu.

Taking place on 28 July 2026, the dinner pairs Magpie chef-owner Eliot Thomas with guest chef Kevin Lee of Poon’s Supper Club. While both chefs built their careers across different parts of the world, they discovered in Singapore that their lives had followed remarkably similar paths, each shaped by New Zealand upbringings, Fijian family roots and a lifelong connection to food as a way of preserving identity and memory. Rather than focusing on a broader national narrative, Hākari — the Māori word for “feasting” — offers a more introspective exploration of heritage, migration and belonging.

The exclusive Hākari menu at Magpie traces the culinary currents linking Fiji, the Pacific Islands and Southeast Asia through dishes including Kokoda Ceviche, Smoked Banana Leaf Seabass, Palusami, Tapioca Leaf Fried Rice, Cassava Mash Curry and Kueh Bingka. The dishes also reflect the chefs’ personal histories, from Lee’s family ties to the legendary Poon’s Restaurant in Fiji’s Nadi Town to Thomas’ own “borderless soul food” philosophy inspired by his maternal grandparents.

For diners, Hākari offers something rarely seen in Singapore: a rare celebration of Pacific cuisine, one told through two chefs whose stories naturally converge across cultures and oceans.
