The Macallan’s fourth release in its Distil Your World limited edition series shines its single malt spotlight on Hong Kong.

Cheers to sipping on skyscrapers and street markets all at once. One of the newest whisky drops from prolific single malt producer The Macallan is Distil Your World Hong Kong, a whisky love letter to Hong Kong in all its heady fusion of tradition and modernity. The fourth release in its Distil Your World series, it follows bottles celebrating London, New York, and Mexico as earlier inspirations.

Created by The Macallan’s Lead Whisky Maker Euan Kennedy with input from the legendary Roca brothers of El Celler de Can Roca fame – which fans will surely remember the whisky brand first partnered for the The Macallan Edition No.2 special release back in 2017 – this new bottle drop promises to be a full-blown sensory deep-dive into the Pearl of the Orient.

“This is a deeply personal whisky, inspired by my time with Joan Roca exploring Hong Kong. It is big and bold,” explained Euan Kennedy, Lead Whisky Maker at The Macallan.

So what does Hong Kong taste like in a glass?

According to Kennedy, it’s rich, spicy, and just a little bit cheeky. Think decadent ginger, fragrant honey, tropical bursts of citrusy pomelo and ripe mango, all wrapped up in oak. There’s supposedly even a nod to the city’s famous and much beloved egg tarts, but surely that’s just wistful – and wishful – projection.

What does the macallan distil your world hong kong taste like?

“I wanted to develop the idea of structure in this whisky, reflective of the building environment rising from the sea to the green peaks behind. To create contrast within this whisky, in the same way Hong Kong is a city of contrast. A whisky with many layers, to be returned to again and again to find more stories to tell, its incredible complexity transporting you on a journey of flavour and memory,” Kennedy explained.

At S$6,500, the non-age statement The Macallan Distil Your World Hong Kong doesn’t come cheap. Unless you’re a serious collector of single malt or an avid fan of the brand, at that price you’re really far better off buying an air ticket to visit and experience Hong Kong all over again for yourself. Even with an indulgent stay in some luxurious five-star hotel over the weekend – we heartily recommend the Four Seasons Hong Kong – you’ll even have enough left over for a decent bottle from The Macallan’s core range to sip over while enjoying the Victoria Harbour view.

But hey if price doesn’t faze you, The Macallan’s latest limited edition is a bold, globe-trotting reminder that good storytelling can sell any whisky.

The Macallan Distil Your World Hong Kong is available exclusively at The Macallan House Singapore at S$6,500 per bottle.
