The Winery Tapas Bar may not serve up a masterclass in authentic Spanish culinary tradition, but it nails something far more elusive — the unpretentious joy of drinking, snacking, and lingering well into the night.

Tapas bars often come with baggage — the expectation of authenticity, along the pressure of offering a substantive menu showcasing the diversity of Spanish flavours with a burgeoning drinks programme to match, among others.

Then there’s The Winery Tapas Bar. This late-night dining destination located in the historic CHIJMES doesn’t pretend to be authentically Spanish in any way, despite its name. Sure this city sibling of The Winery Gourmet Bar in Siglap offers up Iberian favourites with a wide-ranging selection of tapas, along with a decent list of Spanish wines. But it also dances to a different beat.

You’ll get a sense of it even before you step in. There’s live music at the open-air basement courtyard out front every night, but don’t expect flamenco or bolera; you’ll find pop, retro, or even raggae on rotation instead.

The interior leans rustic-chic, all warm woods and inviting open windows, while the outdoor space — leafy, lantern-strung, and ideal for people-watching — makes for a seductive setting for lingering over one too many glasses of Tempranillo.

The vibe is Mediterranean terrace meets city afterwork hangout with an undeniably casual Singaporean air… and it’s all the more fun for it.

The food too is familiar and unfussy. Fill your bellies on a wide selection of tapas here, ranging from Spanish classics like the Padron Peppers, Iberico Ham Croquettes and Patatas Bravas to decidedly unSpanish takes such as Wagyu Beef Brioche Sliders, Duck Confit Tacos, and Suckling Pig Tacos.

There are ample options for vegetarians too, like Porcini Mushroom Croquettes, Sweet Potato Tacos, and Roasted Cauliflower.

But a good reason to be here? The Winery Tapas Bar runs all kinds of promotions throughout the week that are sure to delight the deal hunters. Such as ‘Monday Tapas Nights’, where tapas flow freely for two hours for just S$39++. Or ‘Guinness Nights’ on Tuesday, where fans of the creamy Irish stout can get three pints for S$30. Ladies get a big treat on Wednesdays with unlimited red and white wines, Prosecco, cocktails, and vodka from 6pm to 9pm — no strings attached. Thursdays? You’ll find an offer for two bottles of wine for just S$98.

As though that isn’t enough, The Winery Tapas Bar also runs a daily Happy Hour Wine buffet for just S$38++ where you get to enjoy two hours of unlimited wine handpicked from their premium retail cellar, anytime between 4.30pm to 7pm. If your choice of poison is whisky instead? opt for the ‘Premium Whisky’ promotion of S$300 for twin bottles of familiar Scotch favourites.

More than the sum of its parts, The Winery Tapas Bar brings back a kind of dining experience that’s become rare in the age of trying too hard. Instead it’s really the kind of place you drop into with friends and leave having stayed far longer than intended — probably with your voice hoarser from singalongs, and your head a little lighter thanks to the wine.

Come here for a casual fun time.
