In a city where five-star hotels play it safe, W Kuala Lumpur cranks up the volume with jungle-glam design, pulsating rooftop parties, and a vibe that’s anything but business as usual.
The busy beating heart of Kuala Lumpur does not lack for great hotels. But in a city that brims with skyscrapers and where colonial history clash with edgy modernity, W Kuala Lumpur makes its case as an accommodation of choice with some serious high-energy vibes and quirky, contemporary glamour.
Located mere steps from the Petronas Twin Towers, this isn’t your standard luxury chain property (even if it belongs to one). Officially opened in 2018, this 150-key property totally throws out the standard vanilla business-hotel playbook and instead leans into a design language that’s maximalist-meets-Malaysiana; instead marble-laden lobbies and hushed corridors, you’re greeted by streaming LED raindrops, steel-mirrored staircases, and bamboo-inspired chandeliers that nod to the wild jungle just beyond the city limits. Add batik motifs and a dazzling light wall too, for good measure.

W Kuala Lumpur offers 10 room configurations — following the same fun naming convention across all W hotels — pandering to travellers of different needs. These range from the more compact Wonderful guest room for the solo traveller or couples to its larger Spectacular cousin that can accommodate four persons and offer a view of the Twin Towers.
As for suites, there’s Studio and Marvelous if you prefer a more expansive floor area with separate living and sleeping areas. And if you’re looking to truly splurge? Top-end options include the very spacious Wow, or even the Ewow, a penthouse which comes with private pool and terrace that’s an entire luxury apartment in its own right.
We had the opportunity to stay in the Wonderful guest room earlier this year when we visited Kuala Lumpur for KL Cocktail Week. This may be the hotel’s entry-level room type, but it clocks in at a spacious 42 square metres, which is fantastic for a single traveller and more than comfortable enough for two.

The design-led room carries W’s signature playful-meets-plush ethos, one you similar find over at W Bangkok. The floor is a shimmery black like the slinky LBD for the perfect night out, while pops of colour — think pink chaise lounge, velvet lime green chair, and a transparent neon red panel that separates the bedroom from the ensuite bathroom — pepper the room. Large tassels, inspired by those that adorn traditional Malay wau kites, hang near the bed, while pixelated batik print on one wall also offer a sense of place.
Altogether, the room looks all ready to party.
But what really sets W Kuala Lumpur apart is its pulse. There’s the Living Room — W’s spin on the hotel bar and lounge — where coffee and cake is the order of the day while dessert pairings and mixology share centre stage come evenings. Whether you’re kicking off your day or winding it down, this is the social heart of the hotel.

Then there’s the 12th-floor WET Deck, a rooftop pool bar with knockout views of the Twin Towers that regularly hosts raves. Here day lounging blurs effortlessly into night partying — DJs spin, cocktails flow, and where the city’s cool crowd come together to ogle one another.
As for food, Flock restaurant offers all-day Pan-Asian dining, while YEN redefines comforting Cantonese classics with flair. Craving local food? The hotel is a mere stone’s throw from Restoran Nasi Kandar Pelita for all manner of Indian Muslim eats. Or walk just a little further to the massive mall complex that is KLCC for any other cuisine.
Verdict
W Kuala Lumpur has all the perks of a five-star property — location, luxury, service — but it also brings something few hotels dare to offer: a sense of irreverence, rhythm, and cool. Its progressive, vibe-centric personality may not appeal to those who prefer the staid opulence of a classic luxury stay, but it is more than well suited for younger, sophisticated urbane travellers coming to town to party. Heck, it IS the party.
