Vodka is staging a quiet, confident comeback — and Kazakhstan’s XAOMA shows how craft, provenance and restraint might just make the world care about vodka again.
Vodka has spent much of the last two decades in the wilderness. Once the default order of the 1990s — poured long, mixed sweet, and sold on the promise of being “smooth” — it slowly fell out of fashion as drinkers chased flavour elsewhere. Gin offered botanicals and romance. Whisky delivered age, provenance and narrative heft. Tequila and mezcal arrived with smoke, soil, and plenty of attitude. Vodka, by comparison? Today, as drinkers grow more discerning and bartenders look again at structure, texture and purity, vodka is quietly repositioning itself — not as a blank canvas, but as a spirit of restraint, craft and place. Crucially, XAOMA controls the entire production cycle in-house — from grain cultivation and water extraction to distillation, resting and bottling — a level of vertical integration still rare in vodka. The spirit undergoes multi-stage filtration, extended resting periods of up to 120 days for its premium expressions, and even a final micron-level polish filtration before bottling.
Whether or not one buys into the poetic touches — classical music played during its purification process, or prattle about harmony and balance — the end result is a vodka defined by texture rather than pure neutrality, one that is soft, rounded, and expressive.
That approach is evident across the range. There’s the XAOMA Gold, which leans into elegance and depth offering subtle grain sweetness, light citrus lift and a clean, brisk finish. Then there’s XAOMA Ice, which chases clarity and chill — glacial with a touch of mint, and built for sipping well cold. As proof of its pedigree? XAOMA Gold was earlier this year named “Vodka of the Year” at the 2025 edition of the London Spirits Competition following a triple-blind tasting, a notable achievement in a category often dismissed as virtually indistinguishable at the top end.
What XAOMA ultimately signals is not just the arrival of another premium vodka, but a broader recalibration of the category itself. As drinkers tire of maximalism and sugar-laden shortcuts, there is renewed appreciation for spirits that reward attention rather than demand it. Vodka’s future, I suspect, won’t lie in yelling from mountain tops about mere purity, but insistent education about water source, grain choice, distillation discipline, and time.
In that sense, vodka’s comeback will not look like its past. It will be colder, cleaner, more deliberate. And if brands like XAOMA are any indication, vodka will once again be about craft.
