In a city that rarely does subtlety, The St. Regis Jakarta delivers theatrical flair, flawless service, and an unapologetically grand dose of Jakarta’s high society charm — all with a sabred bottle of champagne in hand.

Poised in the heart of Jakarta’s Golden Triangle, The St. Regis Jakarta stands at the pinnacle of the kind of unrelenting yet measured luxury one expects to find in the Indonesian metropolis’ pulsating financial and cultural core. First opened at the tail end of 2022 — just as the world was slowly emerging from the devastating impact of the global coronavirus pandemic — this sleek 17-storey masterpiece quickly racked up accolades and global recognition even as it ascended to icon status, while simultaneously becoming a magnet for the region’s elite and style-savvy travellers.

It’s also so opulent you almost expect to run into Bobby Saputra being carried on a royal palanquin by a bevy of porters into the hotel’s stunning lobby.

You’ll immediately see why as soon as arrive. Designed by a dream team of international creatives — including Alexandra Champalimaud, Bill Bensley, and Eddy Susanto — The St. Regis Jakarta reflects cultural inspiration from all over the vast Southeast Asian nation, but with fun and quirky contemporary flourishes.

Even the hotel’s glorious entrance, which boasts brass sun motifs embedded in the porte cochere and a front that’s festooned with quaint touches such as impressive floor-to-ceiling oaken cabinets decorated with antiques and vintage knick knacks, is awe-inspiring as it leads you up into a striking black and white marble foyer.

The first thing to catch your eye within the hotel’s soaring lobby is almost definitely the dynamic glass and light installation — the Sound of Light, crafted by celebrated Czech glassmaker LASVIT — suspended from its ceiling; you’ll find an immersive sound and light display performed here to dazzled guests every evening.

It’s all terribly dramatic, in the best possible way. Me? I’ll come here for a spot of champagne when The St. Regis’ signature champagne sabrage takes place.

The rooms? Naturally, they’re divine.

There are a total of 252 rooms, along with 28 suites split across eight different configurations to meet the needs of every class of luxury traveller. There’s the more accessible Deluxe room option to the slightly more resplendent Grand Deluxe, while suite options range from Caroline Astor Suite and Empire Suite to the Presidential Suite. The latter, while not the largest of its kind in the city, is more than generously appointed to accommodate the most demanding royalty or fickle celebrities.

Hailing from a humbler background, I checked into a modestly-sized Grand Deluxe room. I’d be spoilt silly; even this room type offered you a bespoke butler service to run the most mundane of errands. Make a coffee? Yes, sir. Iron my clothes. Yes, sir. Run my bath. Yes, sir.

The Grand Deluxe room

I declined their offer to pack my luggage when it was time to check out; I wasn’t evil enough to demand a stranger handle my soiled, tatty boxers or sweaty gym wear, but I have no doubt they would’ve obliged if I did.

As you can expect from a hotel of this stature, the room drips with luxury. There’s all the state-of-the-art amenities you’d need for a comfortable, indulgent stay. The room is big enough, all 49 square metres of it, for a chaise lounge sofa sitting along your buttery-soft king-sized bed, one that’s plush to fall asleep in. The ensuite bathroom is its own delight; beautifully enrobed in marble, a welcoming bathtub, and a vanity space big enough for ladies to fix their beehives.

Floor-to-ceiling windows and a balcony allow the well-heeled to survey the surrounding skyline with old-money disdain, if they so desire.

Then there are the facilities. The fully-equipped St. Regis Spa is legendary. Luxuriate in the various treatments on offer here, or simply unwind in the relaxing sauna, steam room, or whirlpool after a punishing boardroom meeting or an intense party night out.

You’ll also want to hit the pool, even if you don’t intend to swim. You’ll find plenty of whimsical Bill Bensley touches here, resulting in a whimsical wonderland that just happens to include a body of water for swimming. It’s crazily Instagrammable.

But where The St. Regis Jakarta truly stands out? Its gastronomic offerings. There are eight distinct concepts stamping the hotel’s influence in Jakarta’s dining scene, ranging from quintessential Indonesian favourites at Bel Étage and steakhouse favourites from J.J.A to the signature high tea experience at The Drawing Room.

For cocktail hounds and nightlife hunters? The St. Regis Bar Jakarta combines  clever, layered cocktails, live jazz, and distinct smell of the well coiffed for a classy evening soirée.

There’s art, there’s music, there’s the swirl of performance everywhere you turn. Perhaps most impressive is how The St. Regis Jakarta manages to be both a luxurious retreat as well as a cultural showcase. The hotel doesn’t just sit in Jakarta — it pulses with the rhythm infectious energy of the dynamic if chaotic city. From its celebration of Indonesia’s rich artistry and architecture to its deep respect for timeless rituals synonymous with the St. Regis brand, the property feels deeply rooted in place, yet bursting with cosmopolitan charm.

Verdict

Bobby Saputra would approve. The St. Regis Jakarta makes a grand addition to the city’s ultra-luxe hotel offerings. You’ll be spoiled silly from head to toe by its bespoke butler service, while its expansive gastronomic offerings are certain to attract globe-trotting epicureans. Whether visiting for business or leisure, guests are assured an experience that is both indulgent and memorable. Bring a full wallet.
