lyf one-north Singapore is a different kind of stay.
Located within one-north — Singapore’s major research and development and high technology hub — the Ascott Limited-owned property is designed as a mid- to long-term stay serviced residence created for digital nomads, technopreneurs, and creatives who need easy access to the business park.
But it’s also a lot, lot more.
From the moment you arrive at the twin-towered property at Nepal Hill, it’s clear this is no ordinary serviced residence. There’s a bold mural emblazoned on a flank of one of the buildings, a vibrant and colourful piece by acclaimed Colombian graffiti artist Didier “Jaba” Mathieu comprising tree branches and flying cars meant to depict global connectivity, technology, and community.
The building complex itself is an architectural wonder. Its two towers are connected on an upper floor via a link bridge, and from the top it presents as the shape of an Z; that intended connectivity will prove to be an enduring, and endearing, theme throughout. Its brutalist design — complete with a facade pockmarked with circular windows as though it was the interior of a washing machine — could have threatened to make it look stark and dated; instead it gives off an almost futuristic aura that would not be out of place in an utopian future.
lyf one-north Singapore offers 324 rooms across two categories: a compact One of a Kind studio, as well as an airier Level Up option with the sleeping quarters on an upper loft floor. We recently had the opportunity to stay in a One of a Kind room.
At just 12 square metres with a queen-sized bed occupying most of the room, it’s clearly very compact. But that’s where exactly smart space planning comes into play, and lyf one-north Singapore has done a stellar job in that respect.
From the cutout niche in the wall near the door which acts as a designated ‘drop zone’ where you can place your card key, wallet, etc. when you walk in, to the multiple shelves lining the walls up to the ceiling that offer extra storage, there’s nary an inch of space, either horizontal or vertical, that’s wasted.
The plush bed itself is built on a platform; there’s ample space below to store at least two full-sized luggages. It also comes equipped with a work desk, as well as a standard-sized bathroom with rain shower. And of course, considering its tech-savvy audience, each unit is equipped with blazingly-fast Wi-Fi, a Chromecast-ready TV, and ample power points for juicing up devices.
Interiors are functional yet playful, done in calming neutral hues and flourished with touches of industrial chic.
It’s actually impressive how much lyf one-north managed to squeeze into such limited square footage. And if you feel it’s missing certain amenities typical of long-term stay serviced apartments? You’d be right, but that’s only because these functions are fully provided for by its communal amenities. For example, there are mini fridges, a microwave oven, and hot and cold water dispensers on every floor — it’s convenience right at your doorstep.
Looking to do a spot of cooking? BOND, the social kitchen at lyf one-north Singapore is equipped with full-sized refrigerators, stoves, ovens, cookware, cutlery, and even outdoor charcoal-fired barbecue grills — basically everything you need to cook up a storm. Right outside BOND is an alfresco dining area if you prefer some fresh air, too.
Need to settle your laundry? WASH & HANG is an on-site self-service laundrette with four sets of washers and dryers to take care of any laundry needs. Irons are available on every floor as well.
Have a thesis or presentation to plow through but require inspiration? Head over to CONNECT, a communal lounge that doubles as a co-working space, especially if you feel a little lonely working from your room. Otherwise meeting rooms HUDDLE and COLLAB are available — for a small fee — to run a private team meeting or even workshops.
Looking to exercise? Gym rats will be glad for BURN, a small but decently equipped 24-hour gym with two treadmills, spin bike, rowing machine, and weight-training essentials like kettlebells and dumbbells. Or head to DIP, a 25-metre outdoor pool for some laps or just to lounge in the sun.
There’s even open-air rooftop green lawn HANG OUT, a space where your pet is welcome to join you in downward dog during your daily yoga routine. Yes, lyf one-north Singapore is pet-friendly, provided your pet is not more than 12kg and has a sitting height under two feet.
For those craving community, lyf even puts together some seriously fun programming for its residents. During our stay one weekend there was a pet adoption drive and farmers’ market at MEET, the property’s amphitheatre that doubles as an event space for concerts and talks; a most recent event involved a coffee-fuelled sober rooftop rave party.
What lyf one-north Singapore has going for it is also accessibility. One-north itself was built as a self-contained city; there are plenty of dining and entertainment options within walking distance in neighbouring complexes. Aside from some amazing smashed dry-aged beef burgers from Ye Olde Cow, a food truck right at lyf one-north’s doorstep, we had some excellent pan-fried dumplings from Wang Fu Dim Sum across the road, as well as scrumptious bakes from artisanal bakery Wheathead down the read.
And if you need to go further? There’s a bike-sharing service park right on the property itself, and a two-minute walk to one-north MRT station for seamless access to the rest of Singapore.
Verdict
lyf one-north Singapore isn’t for everyone — it doesn’t offer the plush solitude of a traditional five-star hotel. But for young next-gen travellers seeking vibrant community, smart design, and location-driven convenience, it is hard to beat. It redefines tech-savvy living, offering equal parts live, work, and play, with an offbeat Singapore edge. Whether you’re a digital nomad coding your next startup, studying for a part-time Masters course at National University of Singapore nearby, a solo traveller on a long trip craving community while doing some soul searching, or a small pet-owner needing a place to stay while your house undergoes renovation, lyf one-north Singapore is that dynamic social-living residence to consider.
