Ma Cuisine’s casual daytime concept Bonjour Ma Cuisine serves up familiar Parisian bistro classics that are simply forking good.
Michelin-starred wine-focused French restaurant Ma Cuisine on Craig Road may be better known for its fancy culinary reverence for Burgundy and an obscenely weighty wine menu, but a recently-introduced daytime concept brings a refreshing familiarity for those craving an authentic Parisian bistro experience.
Enter Bonjour Ma Cuisine. It sees the restaurant transform into a breezy bistro during the day slinging out French breakfast and lunch classics done so well they may as well come served with a side of Gallic smugness.
That’s right, it’s finally open during the day.
The Craig Road dining stretch has seen quite a number of new buzzy restaurant openings in recent time. What Bonjour Ma Cuisine offers that these new entrants don’t? An early start. 8am, to be exact. So yes, you can start your day in proper Parisian manner — with a café au lait and croissant — if you so desire.
And you should. Self-styled as Singapore’s first Michelin-starred restaurant breakfast, its extensive menu is a gushing love letter to authentic French gastronomy.
Build your own breakfast. Eggs, either scrambled, sunny-side up, or as a classic omelette. Various French cheeses — creamy Brillat-Savarin, funky Époisses, or an aged Comté.
Feeling peckish? There’s the Poireaux Vinaigrette, lovingly slow-cooked leeks tossed in a tangy mustard dressing and smothered with minced mimosa eggs, are divine. Or the Salade Parisienne, which is what happens when ham, tomato, Comté, and lettuce give each other come-hither looks and decide to get dressed together.
Heartier offerings sing. We had eyed the Quenelle de Brochet Sauce Nantua, a Lyonnaise specialty of fish in lobster drag, but finally settled for the Coquelet Français Rôti, a beautifully roasted baby chook so indecently delicious it should come with a PG rating. You’ll want Frites Maison et Mayonnaise — these are scrumptious house fries. They arrive as batons, all crisp exterior and creamy core.
The Linguine au Parmesan came highly recommended. I’m told a prominent food influencer once ate four servings at a go, with just a little help. I believe it. This is très délicieux.
But the highlight? The Croque Madame Truffe, in this case the classic French ham and cheese sandwich scented with truffle so alluring she’ll bring all the boys to the yard.
Fancy a tipple with your tartare? A well-edited shortlist of French wines is on hand, from bougie bubbles to vin de table with enough swagger to pull it off at lunch.
There’s little on the menu that surprises — and that’s the point. Bonjour Ma Cuisine is not haute cuisine. This is informal home-style French bistro fare done right with just the right level of flirty, and where you don’t need to dress up for the occasion.
Or be judged for ordering four portions of linguine.
